The last few weeks of Term Two...

We did a science experiment in the sandpit...(AKA volcano!)
First we had to build a mountain...
Then we put the cup in the middle...
 And filled it...with..."stuff"...
 Quinn had a go...
 Max had a turn...

And afterwards...we had some good questions and possible solutions...

Why did it take so long to come out?
How can we make it come out faster?
We could use a different thing in the top!
Hopefully we will get to further investigate this next term!  We would like to make a mote where the "stuff" doesn't sink in (Ms Boon is not so sure that the suggestions of metal or wooden frames will work...)

We had an assembly...

Where our authors Sophie, Kupa and Jamin got certificates!
And Quinn did some awesome drumming!

Some reading groups got to share their learning...

One group performed a play...

Micah was the "Brave Little Tailor"
The Red Giant and the Green Giant had a fight (nice work Daisy and Catherine!)
And last of all the Brave Little Tailor got to marry the princess...hehe we all thought that was funny!

And another group created a treasure hunt!

First we had to hide the treasure...
We read the first clue and all thought we should go...that way...or this way...
Then we hunted...some of the clues took a loooooooooooong time to find!
Unfortunately the weather was not so good and the big kids buried the treasure VERY deep, but we managed to dig it up (with some help) before the 3pm....JUST!

Here is the team respnsible for the madness...well done!

A few rain soaked and sandy kids, but one of those days you don't forget!

Tech Expo Powhiri and Matariki...

Kapiti Expo Powhiri

The powhiri was good.  I could see my mum and my aunty and my cousin and my nanny.  I was happy that I went there.
Shawnee
I was a bit annoyed because I had to stand behind the front row, but my mum told me to move up so I had to do what she said.  Then I was a bit squashed but I could still do the actions.
Wairakau
I was squished from the Kapanui boys.  I got sore legs because I was standing up for really long.  I saw my mum taking photos and mum helped me put on my shoes.  Tiare and Caylee went to see mum as well.  She was happy because we all did it!
Kupa
When we got to the powhiri we had to take our shoes off and stand in our line.  We had to sing Maori songs.  I liked it because we got to go on the bus.
Sophie
Well when I was singing I was looking at my mum and she was staring at me.  She was thinking I was great.  Alyah said I was great when she was going home from kindy.  I was also telling Sophie that I wished we were doing it at McDonalds, not the mall, so that when we finished we could eat some!
Cameron

Matariki

I saw the lanterns.  One landed and it had holes in it.  The other lanterns went up, up, up!

FUN FRIDAY (and Thursday!)

Last week (Week 6) we had a lot going on...

First of all we watched the big kids do their cross country...
Then we had our first Buddy class session.
We made ANZAC cookies with our buddies!  YUM YUM
We read a book called "When You're Not Looking"
Then we wrote our own book based on the story.  We wrote our own stories about what we could do when no-one was looking...here are a couple...

AND, last but not least we did an experiment
FIrst we discussed what scientists do...our thoughts were...
MICAH - they might build houses
MAX - they do potions they can turn anything into any colour
CATHERINE - they make experiments like tie dyed milk and erupting volcanoes
JESSE - they can make a night vision potion
Then we discussed what a HYPOTHESIS is - this is our guess about what we think will happen...here are some of ours...
LILY - it will spread out
CAMERON - it will change to green because yellow, red and blue make green
NGARANGI - it will change colours like a rainbow
JOSH - colour dust might come out of the container like steam
using milk, food colouring and dishwashing liquid...
After that we made sure our experiment was fair - everything had to be the SAME, except one thing.  We had to use the same milk, the same amount of food colouring and the same amount of detergent...this made our experiment a FAIR TEST.
CAMERON - We made an experiment.  It was a rainbow.  It was beautiful.  We were learning to be scientists.  It was so much science.
KUPA - This morning we were doing an experiment.  We needed milk, food colouring and a bowl and a cup.  We put in blue, red and yellow.  Two people got to stir it and then it was changing colour.  It changed to grey - they both turned grey.
ELLA - We made a rainbow in a bowl.  It was awesome and now it is green and grey and on the outside it was blue.
Here is Quinn's explanation of what happened...

Week Five

This week we had a cartoon workshop where we learnt how to draw cartoon and do fancy cartoon lettering!
On Friday we found some wood and Wairakau, Josh and Jamin decided to make a slide...We had to sand it to make sure that we didn't get any splinters OUCH!
Now we just have to work out how to make it safe and stable...Sophie thinks we need to add some safety matting, and Jamin thinks we need something to hold onto as we slide down (Ms Boon hopes the nails hold strong!)

Week Three and Four Highlights...

We had HEAPS of rain on Thursday and our school turned into a "WATER VILLAGE"

On Tuesday we had a visit from the circus...
We created our own clown faces...we even used pastels - and didn't make too much mess!
They look amazing up on our wall...

Word Work...

This week we have been busy with our "Focus Words".  Most of us can now spell WAS and THEY...

We had races with magnetic letters...
AND lots of practice on the whiteboards...
Next week we are going to see if we can get our word rocket to the moon by spelling the "Focus Words" correctly in our story writing...watch this space!
